Threshold of Mobility Ex Situ

Context

For my final year project at LASALLE, I decided to work on something I have personally observed and questioned — people’s behaviour on the train.

For many of us, the train serves as a primary mode of transport and we all play the role of a commuter on a daily basis. However, the commuter’s journey is a mundane and repetitive one, in which everyone has become accustomed to the idea of trains as transitional non-places and are each drawn into their own solitary confinement.

When the train is above ground, the windows serve as a medium of ‘escape’ but when the train goes underground, they are left shrouded in darkness and are stuck in a mobility ex situ (Üngür). This research publication documents the behaviours and characteristics of commuters on the train, analysing how they change when the train goes from above ground to underground as well as when travelling solo or with a companion. This project was borne out of this hypothesis that I have  - our trains are not designed with the user in mind but rather purely functional; disregarding the emotional impact the space could have on the user.
